Somehow I fail to see how the people of Iraq are any better off now that they are "liberated". On a recent trip to New York, I saw a bulletin on a church which had the total tally of deaths of Iraqis since the US invasion. Approximately 50,000 Iraqi civilians have perished and about 2,000 US soldiers. And what is this all for?

The Province – July 19, 2006

UNITED NATIONS -- Nearly 6,000 civilians were killed across Iraq in May and June, a spike in deaths that coincided with rising sectarian attacks, the UN said yesterday.

The report describes a wave of lawlessness and crime, including assassinations, bombings, kidnappings, torture and intimidations.

Hundreds of teachers, judges, religious leaders and doctors have been targeted for death, and thousands of people have fled the country, the report said.
