After a few days at the Caravan park in Tsumeb, it already started to feel like home. A tranquil campground with lush green grass (something that was very welcoming after having bushed camped in the sand and dust for weeks before), at least twenty different kind of trees and an abundance of new bird species. But there was more. We noticed this shy little gray cat inquisitively wondering around the campground.
A few days later, we became friends with an upbeat and friendly Australian fellow, named John, who was also staying at the park for a few days. One evening we were all sitting around eating our dinner when out of the shadows appeared the little gray cat; this time a little less shy. I suppose he got a whiff of the sausage we were grilling on the fire and decided to drop by and invite himself for dinner!
After dinner, John got up and looked at the little grey cat and proclaimed, let's call him Felix! With that, John started to walk back to his campground and called, "come along Felix." Felix bounded after him with real enthusiasm.
The next day, Felix came around and decided to give our truck a good inspection. He walked around underneath and carefully looked at and sniffed the gearbox, transfer case and propshafts - all the important stuff. He then walked to each axle, placed his front paws on the differential and took a good look. He left the engine until the end. Hoping up on to the axle he then disappeared into the engine compartment on the left side. A few minutes later he emerged from the right side. The inspection was complete!
Over the next few days, Felix started to hang out with us more and more. Soon, he would rarely leave the campsite. During the day he would nap underneath the truck or by my feet while I was working on the laptop. Felix wasn't the only one napping! At night, he'd hop onto the roof and sleep in the spare wheel next to the rooftop tent.
John and I were grocery shopping one day and we decided we should pick up some food for Felix. I walked down the pet food isle and something immediately caught my attention. "Cats Like Felix, Like Felix." This was it. I had found the right food for Felix.
See if you can spot Felix!
When Felix isn't napping, he's quite playful. The end of the washing line has amused him for hours. He also likes the power chord of my laptop, but I've had a little chat with Felix about the dangers of electricity. He's pretty good about that now. Well, we have become quite fond of Felix and it will be quite sad when we have to leave him behind.
